Going for a day out at the seaside is a must-do for any Brit in the summer, and with the summer holidays finally here, many families will be searching around the coast for the best place for a day at the beach. While many may choose to go to the packed beaches near Brighton or Bournemouth, one place has secretly become a must-visit seaside spot, and what’s better? The flocks of tourists have yet to find it.
Nestled in the Suffolk countryside and sitting on the choppy North Sea, the bright painted houses of Aldeburgh line the seafront to create a quintessentially British seaside without the big crowds. The town is a hit with visitors and even pipped hundreds of others around the country to be named in the top 10 most beautiful seaside spots in the country by Which?.
The consumer body surveyed 1000’s of its members, asking them to rate coastal destinations on a set of criteria to find their favourite place. They had to rank destinations on their beach, seafront, scenery, tourist attractions, and peace and quiet to give them an overall score.
For those looking for a more relaxing trip, Aldeburgh is the place to be, scoring five out of five for peace and quiet as well as being given full marks for its thriving food and drink scene.
The town, which was once known for its shipbuilders, is now a foodie destination. In front of its pretty promenade is a selection of fishermen’s huts selling some of the freshest seafood around.
Unsurprisingly, with a culture of great fish, it has one of the best chippies around, with The Aldeburgh Fish and Chip Shop often being ranked among the best in the country.
Posting to Tripadvisor, a happy customer said: “I love fish and chips, and this was the best I’ve ever had from a takeaway. The fish had beautiful light batter, and was translucent, flaky and delicious. Great chips too. Excellent.”
For foodies planning a trip soon, it may be a particularly smart idea, as every September, Suffolk’s best food and drink businesses come together for the Aldeburgh Food and Drink Festival.
The event has around 130 producers offering you some delicious food, from pop-ups to well-known restaurants to celebrity chef destinations – it isn’t one to miss.
Although a shingle beach may not be for everyone, this one is undoubtedly beautiful and still great for a day out lounging on top of.
One happy visitor leaving a Google Review said: “It’s a really lovely place to visit and walk around, especially during the off season. Some of the buildings are stunning, and the little model boating pond is a must to sit around watching the gulls eying up people’s lunch.”
While another posted: “Aldeburgh is a must when in Suffolk. Gorgeous seaside town with a great promenade. We walked from the car park right along. It was smashing to see all ages enjoying the beach.”
